Maths Club

IMG_6279Working with Emmanuel Community School, Walthamstow, we have introduced and are running a mathematics club which aims to make problem solving and reasoning fun while enabling the pupils to achieve mastery in mathematics. The club also doubles as a teacher development opportunity for the class teachers as they support the group and discuss strategies used during the club and reflect on their practice in the process.

Maths Engagement programmes designed specifically for Looked After Children (LAC)sad-544730_960_720

Children in care underperform compared to other non-looked after children. In 2016,  46% of LAC meet their attainment targets as compared with 73% of Non-LAC in KS1 nationwide. In KS2 and KS4, the gap is similar. We believe learning is by doing and must involve participation. For children to find mathematics relevant and be able to make meaning of their learning in mathematics through active participation and engagement which translates to raised attainment. Intervention must be early and teaching must be approached with a pedagogy that considers understands the aspirational challenges looked after children face and beginning with and building on their interests and passions, relating these to the subject. We use the latest educational learning tools, robotics and coding to engage the interest and participation in the children in mathematics.
